About

My work comes from disquiet.

It is the investigation of our disquiet, its emotions and associations that is the start and the development of the paintings.

I like the changing page — the exchange between the white space and what I place on it: colours, marks and images. These take the painting forward till the work is resolved. The first mark is like the first note. When the painting is complete, I think it conveys  it’s ‘content’ and the path taken in the making of it. I explore the charge of the mark both formally and emotionally.

I work from my own life and from my response to the physical natural world;  it’s  life, growth, decay and death. The image starts figuratively and then,  by following surprises and developing versions of what interests me, it moves towards abstraction.

The aim of my work is to open a space for people to see or feel something unexpected. I hope that a first look will give an understanding  of what the piece is about;  and then that the painting will draw the viewer in and allow deeper discoveries.
